UNIVERSITY OF HERTFORDSHIRE COMPUTER SCIENCE RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM presents "Simulation of Adaptive Cell Behaviour: Vascular Networks as Temporal Patterns" Dr. Katie Bentley (University of Uppsala, Sweden & Boston University, USA) 18 October 2017 (Wednesday) 1 - 2 pm Hatfield, College Lane Campus Seminar Room C408 Everyone is Welcome to Attend Refreshments will be available Abstract: How long does it take cells to collectively make a decision in a complex environment? By integrating simulations (primarily Adaptive Systems approaches e.g. agent-based modelling) and in vitro/in vivo experimentation we have discovered that specific tissue conditions (e.g. as found in diseases such as cancer) and a growing set of targetable pathways can locally adapt the timing and collective dynamics of endothelial cell behaviour to modulate vessel branching and vascular network topology. From this work springs many new questions, emerging therapeutic strategies and insights/approaches relevant to the broader biological and technological, complex systems domains. --------------------------------------------------- Hertfordshire Computer Science Research Colloquium http://cs-colloq.cs.herts.ac.uk
