UNIVERSITY OF HERTFORDSHIRE COMPUTER SCIENCE RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM presents "The Power of Posture as a Modality for Affective Human-Computer Interaction" Dr. Nadia Bianchi-Berthouze (Interaction Centre, University College London) 2nd May 2007 (Wednesday) Lecture Theatre E350 Hatfield, College Lane Campus 3 - 4 pm Coffee/tea and biscuits will be available. [Catering Permitting] Everyone is Welcome to Attend [Space Permitting] Abstract: In comparison to affective facial and vocal expression, affective posture has received little attention in the field of affective computing. A reason for that is the sheer complexity and variability of postural language. We are investigating the possibility of grounding affective states conveyed by body postures into low-level descriptors that could then be exploited in HCI tasks. The research questions we address are: 1) How far can we go with low-level descriptions? i.e., can we, for example, capture nuances and intensity from kinematic information? 2) Are body postures universal, or are there cultural dialects? 3) How important are body postures compared to facial expressions? About the Speaker: Dr. Nadia Bianchi-Berthouze is Lecturer at the UCL Interaction Centre, University College London, Departments of Psychology and Computer Science. http://www.uclic.ucl.ac.uk/people/n.berthouze/ -------------------------------------------------- Hertfordshire Computer Science Research Colloquium http://homepages.feis.herts.ac.uk/~nehaniv/colloq
