UNIVERSITY OF HERTFORDSHIRE COMPUTER SCIENCE RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM presents "Blurring Boundaries: Art, Life and Computation" Anna Dumitriu (Visiting Research Fellow CCNR, University of Sussex) and Alex May (Independent Artist/Director Quadratura Ltd) 1 December 2010 (Wednesday) Lecture Theatre A161 Hatfield, College Lane Campus 1 -2 pm Everyone is Welcome to Attend Refreshments will be available Abstract: Artist Dumitriu will discuss her project "The Emergence of Consciousness" which uses performance art both as a potential scientific methodology and as a means of widening public understanding of the issues of artificial life, machine consciousness and techno-ethics. She will also talk about her work with microbiology, her project "Cybernetic Bacteria" and her role as co-chair of the Alan Turing Year (2012) Culture Committee. Alex May's work focuses on the use of digital projection, 3D video mapping, illumination, and optics to create animated trompe l'oeil effects using scientific theories of perspective and projective geometry. He is a veteran programmer specializing in, but not limited to, high performance, real-time audio/visual processing, creating his own software to facilitate his own art projects as well as releasing open-source tools that are in use by digital artists worldwide.
