Abstract:

In this research colloqium talk, I present my personal research background
within the Cognitive Service Robotics Apartment (CSRA) project at
CITEC. The project combines a smart home with ambient intelligence
functionalities and a cognitive social robot with advanced manipulation
capabilities to explore the all day use of cognitive interaction
technology for human assistance.  In contrast to commercially available
smart homes which only have a limited amount of interaction sites, the
CSRA supports a wide range of interfaces with varying complexity. Thereby,
parallel manipulation of the same device might occur, e.g., if two persons
interact with the apartment at the same time in different locations.
   After an introduction to the lab and the project's major lines of
research, the talk will focus on an interaction concept that aims to
coordinate parallel user interactions and autonomously performed system
behaviors.  With this concept, interactive behaviors can be categorized,
prioritized, and finally arbitrated in a user-aware manner. To achieve
this, interactive components can dynamically allocate resources such
as sensors or actuators or require exclusive access to other services
such as face identification while a central component administrates the
scheduling of these requests.
