UNIVERSITY OF HERTFORDSHIRE COMPUTER SCIENCE RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM presents "Giving Objects the Sense of Touch: A novel tangible interface based on acoustic localization techniques" " Dr. Ze Ji (School of Computer Science, University of Hertfordshire) 28 October 2009 (Wednesday) Lecture Theatre E351 Hatfield, College Lane Campus 3 - 4 pm Everyone is Welcome to Attend Refreshments will be available Abstract: Tangible interfaces, such as keyboards, mice, touch pads, and touch screens, are widely used in human computer interaction. A common disadvantage with them is the presence of mechanical or electronic devices at the point of interaction with the interface. This presentation will start from a brief background introduction of ubiquitous computing, and then introduce work aimed at developing new tangible computer interfaces that can be created out of almost any surface by detecting the vibrations generated by the interaction of a user's finger with the surface. Various approaches have been investigated in this work, including the time difference of arrival (TDOA), the location template matching method, and continuous object tracking. Corresponding demonstrations will be also presented. --------------------------------------------------- Hertfordshire Computer Science Research Colloquium http://homepages.feis.herts.ac.uk/~nehaniv/colloq
