UNIVERSITY OF HERTFORDSHIRE COMPUTER SCIENCE RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM presents "Biological Systems: Computational Analysis and Modelling" Dr. Jan T. Kim (School of Engineering and Computer Science, University of Hertfordshire) 27 November 2019 13:00 - 14:00 Hatfield, College Lane Campus Seminar Room C152 Everyone is welcome to attend. Refreshments will be available. Abstract: In biological systems, information is generated by evolution and it is instrumental in producing a phenotype that is well adapted to an organism's environment. These two aspects of genetic information are at the centre of my research, of which I will present the following selection: * Phylogeny analysis: Resolving land plant phylogeny in the pre- and post-genomic era. * Formally modelling the evolution of gene regulatory information in transcription factor binding sites. * Computational modelling of gene regulatory networks and their role in organising plant morphogenesis. * Using gene expression data to assess regulatory network topologies. These subjects are in an interdisciplinary area encompassing computer science and bioscience aspects, and will include brief basics and background to ensure it is accessible to a general audience.
