UNIVERSITY OF HERTFORDSHIRE COMPUTER SCIENCE RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM presents "Lessons for Machine Learning from Cognitive Science" speaker: Dr. Peter Lane Computer Science Department University of Hertfordshire 6 November 2002 (Wednesday) Lecture Theatre E351 Hatfield Campus 3 - 4 pm Coffee/tea and biscuits will be available. Everyone is Welcome to Attend [Space Permitting] Abstract: Making machines learn is a question of interest to many disciplines: we have algorithms from artificial intelligence, from statistical learning, and from cognitive science, to name just three. In domains where humans have expertise, it is relevant to ask whether findings in cognitive science can improve the performance of machine learning algorithms. Themes of interest include: appropriate generalisations, focus of attention, and continuous learning. I shall consider, in brief, two application areas. The first is learning to parse natural language, where I shall describe the development of the Simple Synchrony Network. The second is the categorisation of visual images, a work in progress based upon the CHREST model of human expertise. -- Hertfordshire Computer Science Research Colloquium Abstracts On-line: http://homepages.feis.herts.ac.uk/~nehaniv/colloq/
