UNIVERSITY OF HERTFORDSHIRE COMPUTER SCIENCE RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM presents "The Cerebellum: A Temporal Integrator?" Dr. Reinoud Maex (Biological and Neural Computation Group, STRI, University of Hertfordhshire) 16 December 2009 (Wednesday) Lecture Theatre E351 Hatfield, College Lane Campus 3 - 4 pm Everyone is Welcome to Attend Refreshments will be available Abstract: The regular structure of the cerebellar cortex has prompted researchers 40 years ago to liken the cerebellum to a perceptron or computer. In our approach, we use computer simulations to make predictions about the dynamics of the circuit, starting from firm but incomplete experimental data. In this talk, I will propose that an often neglected component of the circuit, providing feedback between the principal neurons, may extend the time-constant of the dynamics by a factor of more than one thousand. This would explain how this apparently fast circuit can control processes evolving on time-scales from milliseconds to seconds. --------------------------------------------------- Hertfordshire Computer Science Research Colloquium http://homepages.feis.herts.ac.uk/~nehaniv/colloq
