Abstract:

Developpments in machine learning are taking place at an astonishing pace 
and already are having huge societal impact. The question we must confront
as computer scientists is how do we evaluate these learners and in
particular how do we predict their likely field performance from training
behaviour? In order to answer these questions I consider two classes of
problem both drawn from the domain of software engineering: project effort
prediction and software defects.  I conclude by arguing that the concerns
of researchers need to be better aligned with the likely end-users.
