UNIVERSITY OF HERTFORDSHIRE COMPUTER SCIENCE RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM presents "AI-Native Data Processing across the Edge–Cloud Continuum: From Intelligent Ingestion to Data Interaction" Prof. Francesco La Rosa (Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, Physical Sciences and Earth Sciences (MIFT), University of Messina) 25th November 2026 (Wednesday) B160 Hatfield, College Lane Campus 13:00 - 14:00 Everyone is Welcome to Attend Refreshments will be available Abstract: Modern data-intensive applications increasingly need to process heterogeneous, distributed, and continuously generated data while balancing latency, computational cost, scalability, and access to advanced AI capabilities. Rather than relying exclusively on centralized cloud infrastructures, emerging architectures distribute computation and intelligence across the edge–cloud continuum, enabling data and tasks to be processed at different levels according to their requirements and available resources. This talk explores an AI-native approach to distributed data processing in which artificial intelligence is integrated throughout the data lifecycle. AI can support data ingestion, preprocessing and cleaning, assist in the interpretation and processing of heterogeneous information, and enable higher-level querying and exploration of the resulting data. The underlying idea is to move beyond the conventional use of AI as a downstream analytical component. Instead, intelligence becomes an integral part of the data-management pipeline, helping transform raw data into usable information and supporting more natural and flexible interaction with complex data sources. At the application level, intelligent interfaces can provide integrated environments for querying, exploring, and presenting relevant information. The talk will discuss the architectural principles of this approach, the distribution and possible deferral of computational tasks across edge and cloud resources, and the main challenges involved in building AI-native data pipelines that are adaptive, scalable, and resource-aware. --------------------------------------------------- Hertfordshire Computer Science Research Colloquium http://homepages.feis.herts.ac.uk/~nehaniv/colloq
