UNIVERSITY OF HERTFORDSHIRE COMPUTER SCIENCE RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM presents "Pre-semantic connotations of visual processing and imagery: time and identity" Dongxue Zhang (Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich, Germany) 28 October 2026 (Wednesday) B160 Hatfield, College Lane Campus 13:00 - 14:00 Everyone is Welcome to Attend Refreshments will be available Abstract: How does visual imagery operate before meaning emerges? I will present a series of behavioural studies on the phenomenon of “temporal dilation”, where dynamic movement affects the temporal processing of visual targets, and discuss explanations based on evolution theory of threat vs information-processing. Even when there is no visual input, occipital lobe – the brain’s center for visual processing – is still in charge of mental images. I will present an fMRI study where we see groups with different cultural identities show highly correlated activity in the occipital lobe with the same prompt, even though it diverges in regions in charge of identity and emotions. --------------------------------------------------- Hertfordshire Computer Science Research Colloquium http://homepages.feis.herts.ac.uk/~nehaniv/colloq
